ChatGPT Phone Verification: Steps, Errors and Fixes

OpenAI doesn’t always ask for a phone number, and its rules shift over time. Here’s when the check appears, how to complete it with a virtual number, and what to do when OpenAI refuses the number.

OpenAI treats phone verification as a speed bump. Every ChatGPT conversation and API call costs real computing power, so OpenAI has good reason to check that each new account belongs to a person rather than a script creating hundreds of them. The catch, for you, is that your personal number ends up tied to the account. A virtual mobile number can take the code instead. This guide covers when OpenAI asks, which numbers it accepts, how to verify with a SimBeep number, and what its errors mean.

When and why OpenAI asks for a phone number

OpenAI’s requirements have changed several times and can differ by product, region and sign-up method, so treat this as a map rather than a rulebook. At the time of writing, the phone step tends to appear in three places:

  • ChatGPT sign-up. Many people sign up with an email address or a Google, Microsoft or Apple account and never see a phone screen. Others are asked, depending on their region and on what OpenAI’s systems make of the sign-up.
  • The API platform. The developer side has often asked for a verified number before you can create API keys, and free trial credit has historically been tied to the number.
  • Abuse prevention. Unusual activity, such as many sign-ups from one network or traffic that looks automated, can bring up a phone check on an account that never needed one.

Some advanced API features may also ask the organization to verify an identity document. That’s a separate process, and a phone number doesn’t replace it.

What OpenAI checks about the number

OpenAI phone number verification is stricter than most apps’ checks. In our experience, a number has to clear four hurdles:

  1. It’s a mobile number. VoIP and landline numbers are usually refused outright; non-VoIP vs VoIP numbers explains why. SimBeep numbers are mobile numbers on carrier networks.
  2. It’s from a supported country. OpenAI’s services aren’t available everywhere, and numbers from unsupported countries are generally rejected.
  3. It hasn’t verified too many accounts. OpenAI limits how many accounts one number can verify. That’s why numbers from free public SMS sites rarely get through: countless people have tried them before you (see free SMS sites vs virtual numbers).
  4. It’s entered correctly. The country selected in the form has to match the number, with no duplicated country code and no extra leading zero.

How to verify ChatGPT with a SimBeep number

  1. Reach OpenAI’s phone screen first. Get through the email and profile steps until the form asks for a number. The number you reserve waits 20 minutes for the code, and that time should go to the code, not to typing.
  2. Open the ChatGPT verification page and choose a country where OpenAI is available, ideally the one you’re connecting from.
  3. Pick a network. Each one shows its live price, how many numbers are free and its measured delivery rate as four signal bars. The best network is pre-selected. For OpenAI, give the bars more weight than the price (see the next section).
  4. Reserve the number. The price is held on your balance and charged only if the SMS arrives.
  5. Enter the number in OpenAI’s form. Select the matching country, then paste the rest of the number. If the form lets you choose how to receive the code, for example by text message or WhatsApp, choose text message.
  6. Enter the code. It appears in your order seconds after OpenAI sends it, extracted and ready to copy, and the page refreshes on its own. Codes expire fairly quickly, so enter it right away.
  7. No code after two minutes? Cancel, pick another network, update the number in OpenAI’s form and request a new code. Hammering the resend button for the same number is the fastest route to a rate limit.

Choosing the country and network

Picking a virtual number for ChatGPT comes down to one question: will OpenAI accept this line today? In our experience, the most common reason for failure isn’t delivery; it’s reuse. When a network’s numbers have recently been used for many OpenAI accounts, more of them get refused, and that tends to show up in the network’s delivery rate. A few rules of thumb:

  • Prefer three or four bars, even at a slightly higher price. The bars reflect recent orders where the code actually arrived. For a strict app, that’s the best signal you have that numbers on the network are still accepted.
  • Stay in a supported country that matches your connection. A number from the country your IP address points to looks ordinary. A mismatch isn’t always fatal, but it adds friction for no benefit.
  • Move on after two failures. If a network fails twice, try another network in the same country, then another supported country. Retrying the same route rarely changes the result.
  • Don’t chase the cheapest line. A one-time code costs little next to the time a refused number wastes, and you’re only charged when a code arrives anyway.

“Already in use,” “not supported” and other errors

OpenAI’s wording changes from time to time, but the errors fall into a few families:

Error (roughly)Usual causeWhat to do
“This phone number is already linked to the maximum number of accounts,” or “already in use”The number has verified as many OpenAI accounts as OpenAI allowsPick another network for a fresh number; don’t retry the same one
“Phone number not supported” or “invalid phone number”A VoIP or landline number, an unsupported country, or a formatting slipCheck the country and format, then choose a mobile network in a supported country
“Too many requests,” or a request to waitToo many code requests from your account or connectionStop and wait, ideally a few hours, before trying again
No error, but no codeDelay or filtering on that routeCancel after two minutes and switch networks

In all four cases, no SMS reaches the number, so nothing is charged: the hold on your balance is released when you cancel, or automatically when the 20-minute window ends. For a deeper checklist on missing codes, see why an SMS code doesn’t arrive.

Keeping access after verification

In most cases, the phone number isn’t a login factor afterward. You sign in to ChatGPT with your email and password, or with Google, Microsoft or Apple, and the number was a one-time check. That’s why a one-time number is usually enough. To keep the account solid:

  • Turn on multi-factor authentication with an authenticator app in ChatGPT’s security settings, and store any recovery code it gives you somewhere safe.
  • Secure the account you sign in with. If you log in with Google, your ChatGPT access is only as safe as that Google account; our guide to Google account phone verification covers making it independent of any number.
  • Rent a number if you expect re-verification. If you’re setting up an API organization for a long project, or OpenAI has asked you to verify again before, a rented number stays reserved for your account for 7, 14 or 30 days and receives every SMS sent to it. For a strict app like this one, choose a physical SIM or premium line. Rentals never renew on their own, so renew before the end date to keep the number.

Use one number per genuine account: multiplying free trials or getting around a suspension goes against OpenAI’s terms and our acceptable use policy.

Next step: open the ChatGPT verification page, pick a supported country with a four-bar network, and have OpenAI’s phone screen open before you reserve the number.

Questions

Does ChatGPT still require a phone number?

Not always. At the time of writing, many people sign up for ChatGPT with just an email or a Google, Microsoft or Apple account, while the API platform and flagged sign-ups are more likely to ask for a number. OpenAI changes this over time, so go by the screen you actually see.

Can I use a virtual number for OpenAI phone number verification?

Usually, if it’s a mobile number from a supported country that hasn’t already verified many accounts. OpenAI can still refuse any number, but with SimBeep you’re only charged if the code arrives.

Why does OpenAI say my phone number is already in use?

That number has already verified as many OpenAI accounts as OpenAI allows. Retrying won’t help; pick another network or country for a fresh number.

Will I need the same number to log in later?

Usually not. You sign in with your email or with Google, Microsoft or Apple, and the number was a one-time check; if you expect OpenAI to ask again, rent a number for 7, 14 or 30 days.

Which country should I choose for ChatGPT?

One where OpenAI’s services are available, ideally the one you’re connecting from. Within that country, pick the network with the strongest delivery-rate bars rather than the cheapest one.
